I’m pretty upset by what I have just read and I’m hoping someone can tell me I’ve misinterpreted this:

St. Veronica

St. Veronica
Feastday: July 12
1st century

“The woman of Jerusalem who wiped the face of Christ with a veil while he was on the way to Calvary. According to tradition, the cloth was imprinted with the image of Christ’s face.” Unfortunately, there is no historical evidence or scriptural reference to this event, but the legend of Veronica became one of the most popular in Christian lore and the veil one of the beloved relics in the Church. According to legend, Veronica bore the relic away from the Holy Land, and used it to cure Emperor Tiberius of some illness. The veil was subsequently seen in Rome in the eighth century, and was translated to St. Peter’s in 1297 by command of Pope Boniface VIII. Nothing is known about Veronica, although the apocryphal Acts of Pilate identify her with the woman mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew who suffered from an issue of blood. Her name is probably derived from Veronica , as was reported by Giraldus Cambrensis. The term was thus a convenient appellation to denote the genuine relic of Veronica’s veil and so differentiate from the other similar relics, such as those kept in Milan. The relic is still preserved in St. Peter’s, and the memory of Veronica’s act of charity is commemorated in the Stations of the Cross. While she is not included in the Roman Martyrology, she is honored with a feast day. Her symbol is the veil bearing the face of Christ and the Crown of Thorns.”

Someone set me straight on this. She/her actions are LEGEND??? To me, legend means that something is not true….it’s just a story. St. Veronica is always someone I have greatly admired. I have thought that if I have another daughter I would name her Veronica.

About hypocrites:
[63:1] When the hypocrites come to you they say, “We bear witness that you are the messenger of GOD.” GOD knows that you are His messenger, and GOD bears witness that the hypocrites are liars.

[63:2] Under the guise of their apparent faith, they repel the people from the path of GOD. Miserable indeed is what they do.

The Myth of Intercession Shattered:

[63:6] It is the same for them, whether you pray for their forgiveness, or not pray for their forgiveness; GOD will not forgive them. For GOD does not guide the wicked people.

Sura 62 – Al-Jumu’ah (Friday)….

Jews:
[62:5] The example of those who were given the Torah, then failed to uphold it, is like the donkey carrying great works of literature. Miserable indeed is the example of people who rejected GOD’s revelations. GOD does not guide the wicked people.

[62:6] Say, “O you who are Jewish, if you claim that you are GOD’s chosen, to the exclusion of all other people, then you should long for death if you are truthful!”

[62:7] They will never long for it, because of what they have committed. GOD is fully aware of the wicked.

[62:8] Say, “The death that you are trying to evade will catch up with you sooner or later. Then you will be returned to the Knower of all secrets and declarations, then He will inform you of everything you had done.”

Important Commandments to All Believers:

[62:9] O you who believe, when the Congregational Prayer (Salat Al-Jumu`ah) is announced on Friday, you shall hasten to the commemoration of GOD, and drop all business. This is better for you, if you only knew.

[62:10] Once the prayer is completed, you may spread through the land to seek GOD’s bounties, and continue to remember GOD frequently, that you may succeed.

[62:11] When some of them come across a business deal, or some entertainment, they rush to it and leave you standing! Say, “What GOD possesses is far better than the entertainment or the business. GOD is the best Provider.”

Thinking about which church to attend tomorrow….

…I was scouting around the net for a RC church somewhere near where we will likely be moving. All of them have only one or two masses every Sunday and they are extremely early….which will not work for us at this time for a few reasons. So, I think I’m going to head to a local church that I’ve never been to before. We’ve only got several dozen in my town.

I am hoping and praying so much to be inspired….to be able to regain my childhood faith back again, that was so easy to possess at the time. Little did I know I’d grow older and incredibly cynical. I allowed my faith to be destroyed and I did not even see it happening. I want God to enter our lives and provide us the hope we so desperately need. I need to be able to put everything in God’s hands. Oh, it was so natural when I was a kid!

I think I am possessed by the secular world and I need to find a retreat from it. I need to regain my own thoughts back again. I know what’s really important for goodness sake! I know that worldy goods mean nothing, yet I am so disgustingly covetous of it all. I think my deep fear is that people will look down on me….and I think I carry that from my childhood. Time to get over it. How many times have you been shocked to find out that the family in the neighborhood with the most gorgeous house, etc., etc. just broke up, or a member committed suicide or one spouse was cheating. I’m too fooled by what I see on the outside. What I should realize is that what I have on the “inside” of my home really is real and is precious. I am incredibly lucky. I could live in a dump (and practically do) and I really have everything to be happy for right now.

Looking at college costs….

….and really just about to flip out. I’ve been perusing the websites of a number if different private colleges across the country that are known for outstanding academics. We’re looking at a minimum of 30K to 50K, increasing at a good 5% per annum. Then I look at what we have been able to save so far in our kids’ 529 plans (and how they’ve plummeted….a big Bronx cheer for the NY plan which allows NO fixed option, hence we opened up a CT 529). We have fixed money also….but it earns NO WHERE NEAR that 5%. My kids are 3 and 4 and after saving for several years now we can afford a solid semester for each of them at one of these top colleges. What if our country really is entering a prolonged recession? What if the global economy is really in trouble?

I know schools have financial aid packages which commonly include scholarships. Guess what though? The folks I’ve talked to still said that the cost of the school, even with the scholarship was prohibitive. I would have to ask myself how much debt my kids reasonably want to be in upon graduating college, especially if they plan to go to graduated school.

So as a back-up, I’ve started looking at state colleges. They are getting more competitive….and that’s likely because college costs will continue to be more and more out of reach for more students. Education is becoming more and more a privilege for the wealthy. If I hustle out there, I can likely pay for a state university and maybe have some money left over for graduate training of the children’s choice.

I’ve often thought about brining other children into our family. This is one area that deters me. How the heck will I educate all of them? How the heck can I promise to provide a real future for them? I know…it’s probably more education than they would have gotten back home. I wonder sometimes if I should give up the thought though of really being well off. That was always the plan, but I wonder sometimes if I’m shoveling *poop* against a tide. I read on another blog that maybe many of us should get used to the idea of getting poorer and poorer. He may be right. After all that’s what’s been happening to the average American family for several decades now. I don’t see any end in sight.

Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament…

…I’m trying to understand this ritual. I started by reading a few religious sites. Although I gained something from reading them, they used terminology that I still don’t understand and made historical references that I don’t know much about. I decided to simplify things a bit. Yes, I went to Wikipedia. Although I don’t take what I read as written in stone, it’s a start.

Here’s the link: Wikipedia: Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament

Here’s what I am gathering. There are obviously steps that are taken to alter the host before it undergoes transubstantiation. The host has already been consecrated, which I understand to mean that it has been dedicated for a certain purpose, and becomes the Blessed Sacrament. The host is originally kept in the tabernacle and then, during the ceremony, the priest performs the exposition which involves placing the host in a monstrance. This is when we sang O Salutaris Hostia, which I had no idea was written by St. Thomas Aquinas! Then there is an opening prayer. Then a period of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, which is usually performed in silence. The priest exposes the host to incense while the congregation sings Tantum Ergo. The priest then performs the Benediction and the host will ultimately be placed back in the tabernacle.

Now, if I am understanding all of this correctly, the Blessed Sacrament will remain in the tabernacle until the priest converts it to the body and blood of Christ.

I’m wondering why I never saw this service at my childhood parish, or anywhere else for that matter. It makes me wonder if this rite was previously performed privately from the congregation, but the Latin Mass has changed this???

I also was mistaken as to why you kneel/genuflect before you enter and after you leave the pew. I thought it was in honor of the Crucifix. No!…It’s in honor of the Blessed Sacrament! I also didn’t realize that one kneels on the right knee…never the left.

Sura 61 – As-Saff (The Row; The Rank)….

Liars:
O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do? (As-Saff 61:2)
Most hateful it is with Allâh that you say that which you do not do. (As-Saff 61:3)
Verily, Allâh loves those who fight in His Cause in rows (ranks) as if they were a solid structure. (As-Saff 61:4)
And who does more wrong than the one who invents a lie against Allâh, while he is being invited to Islâm? And Allâh guides not the people who are Zâlimûn (polytheists, wrong-doers and disbelievers) folk. (As-Saff 61:7)

Planned victory over all other religions:
He it is Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad SAW) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islâmic Monotheism) to make it victorious over all (other) religions even though the Mushrikûn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh and in His Messenger Muhammed SAW) hate (it). (As-Saff 61:9)

Sura 60 – Al-Mumtahinah (The Woman That Examines)….

How disbelievers can harm you:
Should they gain the upper hand over you, they would behave to you as enemies, and stretch forth their hands and their tongues against you with evil, and they desire that you should disbelieve. (Al-Mumtahinah 60:2)

On Judgment Day (for disbelievers):
Neither your relatives nor your children will benefit you on the Day of Resurrection (against Allâh). He will judge between you. And Allâh is the All-Seer of what you do. (Al-Mumtahinah 60:3)

Treatment toward disbelievers:
It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allâh forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are the Zâlimûn (wrong-doers those who disobey Allâh). (Al-Mumtahinah 60:9)

Where the title comes from/How to treat women with whom you have newly come into contact with:
O you who believe! When believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them, Allâh knows best as to their Faith, then if you ascertain that they are true believers, send them not back to the disbelievers, they are not lawful (wives) for the disbelievers nor are the disbelievers lawful (husbands) for them. But give the disbelievers that (amount of money) which they have spent [as their Mahr] to them. And there will be no sin on you to marry them if you have paid their Mahr to them. Likewise hold not the disbelieving women as wives, and ask for (the return of) that which you have spent (as Mahr) and let them (the disbelievers, etc.) ask back for that which they have spent. That is the Judgement of Allâh. He judges between you. And Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Wise. (Al-Mumtahinah 60:10)
And if any of your wives have gone from you to the disbelievers, and you have an accession (by the coming over of a woman from the other side), then pay to those whose wives have gone, the equivalent of what they had spent (on their Mahr). And fear Allâh in Whom you believe. (Al-Mumtahinah 60:11)
O Prophet! When believing women come to you to give you the Bai’â (pledge), that they will not associate anything in worship with Allâh, that they will not steal, that they will not commit illegal sexual intercourse, that they will not kill their children, that they will not utter slander, intentionally forging falsehood (i.e. by making illegal children belonging to their husbands), and that they will not disobey you in any Ma’rûf (Islâmic Monotheism and all that which Islâm ordains) then accept their Bai’â (pledge), and ask Allâh to forgive them, Verily, Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Al-Mumtahinah 60:12)

Sura 59 – Al-Hashr (The Gathering; Exile/Banishment)….

Here is where the title of this Sura comes from:
He it is Who drove out the disbelievers among the people of the Scripture (i.e. the Jews of the tribe of Banî An-Nadîr) from their homes at the first gathering. You did not think that they would get out. And they thought that their fortresses would defend them from Allâh! But Allâh’s (Torment) reached them from a place whereof they expected it not, and He cast terror into their hearts, so that they destroyed their own dwellings with their own hands and the hands of the believers. Then take admonition, O you with eyes (to see). (Al-Hashr 59:2)

Allah distributing the wealth????:
And what Allâh gave as booty (Fai’) to His Messenger (Muhammad SAW) from them, for which you made no expedition with either cavalry or camelry. But Allâh gives power to His Messengers over whomsoever He wills. And Allâh is Able to do all things. (Al-Hashr 59:6)
What Allâh gave as booty (Fai’) to His Messenger (Muhammad SAW) from the people of the townships, – it is for Allâh, His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), the kindred (of Messenger Muhammad SAW), the orphans, AlMasâkin (the poor), and the wayfarer, in order that it may not become a fortune used by the rich among you. And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it), and fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is Severe in punishment. (Al-Hashr 59:7)
(And there is also a share in this booty) for the poor emigrants, who were expelled from their homes and their property, seeking Bounties from Allâh and to please Him. And helping Allâh (i.e. helping His religion) and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW). Such are indeed the truthful (to what they say);- (Al-Hashr 59:8)
And those who, before them, had homes (in Al-Madinah) and had adopted the Faith, love those who emigrate to them, and have no jealousy in their breasts for that which they have been given (from the booty of Banî An-Nadîr), and give them (emigrants) preference over themselves, even though they were in need of that. And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, such are they who will be the successful. (Al-Hashr 59:9)
